BE YOUR OWN BOSS
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

It's easy to become distracted while working at home. Whatever
the reason may be for your distractions you have to a way to
eliminate them if you want to get your work done. I know that
most of you have kids to feed, or dinner to cook, or laundry
to clean, but if you wouldn't be doing that in a traditional
office then you shouldn't be doing it while you're working at
home. If you want to be taken seriously, and earn some serious
money in the process, you have to treat your job as a job. If
you have to work after the kids go to bed, so be it! If you
have to take a few days off a week to get the other household
jobs done, do it! And if you can't seem to convince the other
people in your life that you need privacy to work then lock
them out of your office! There is a reason that offices put
up cubicle walls to separate workers... distractions will kill
your productivity!

"Survivor...From TV To The Internet"

By Christopher Wright, Guerrilla Marketer

Survivor...the show goes something along these lines. They take a
group of people and place them in remote destinations. Then we wait
and see who forms partnerships...and who double crosses who (whom?).
What if someone dropped you off in the middle of the Internet (where
would that be anyway?) and you had 30 days to make a profit, what
would you do?

Well, that's exactly the situation one faces when they decide to
pursue an Internet venture. This is where many become infected with
the deadly virus...'get-richous-quickitis'. When infected, you
become susceptible to the 'dark side' of Internet marketing. You
begin practicing the dark arts...bulk email (spam), FFA link pages,
and safe-lists (opt-in spam) just to name a few. Is there any cure
for this disease? Yes!

The first thing people should (or eventually will) realize is that
the Internet itself is not a business, just a business tool.
Arguably the most powerful tool invented...but nevertheless just a
tool. What this means is that the rules of business have not changed,
just the way they're implemented.

Now, as for our 30 day challenge, I would consider forming a joint
venture with an ezine editor. I would try to get the editor to
endorse my product/service. Doing so enables you to side step one
of the hardest obstacles of Internet marketing...TRUST! I have come
to believe that this is probably THE most important ingredient in
your marketing cookbook. You may be able to write the most compelling
ad copy and create the most functionally and beautifully designed
site that could be done by humans (excluding get-rich-quick artists,
of course...they ARE superhumans:)

Offline its said that direct mail promotions produce ,at most, a
1%-3% response. But with the power of the editor's endorsement and
PROPER FOLLOW UP, a 7%-10% response can be achieved. Some marketers
have received an even greater return. So, it's no wonder that FFA
link pages and all the other gimmicks produce such feeble results.
My personal opinion is that the only reason these gimmicks work (as
little as they do) is because of the 'greater fool' theory. Because
the Internet is still growing, new members join the 'netrepreneur'
ranks. These are in turn infected and the cycle starts again. But
the Internet is quickly maturing and 'greater fools' will become
increasingly hard to find.

DOWNLOAD OF INTEREST
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

The download of the week this week is an easy one, upgrade your
web browser if you haven't already. Whether you're a Netscape or
Internet Explorer user, it is important that you have the latest
and greatest version of your favorite browser on your system for
a number of reasons. I know that many of you think upgrades are
only meant to add features, but most upgrades also include a
number of security fixes that can, and will be exploited if you
haven't updated your browser. With the number of transactions I
do via the web on a yearly basis I don't want to leave anything
to chance. If you're a Netscape user head to Netscape.com, if
you prefer IE simply click the Windows Update icon on your start
menu. Upgrade now!

WHAT ARE THEY THINKING
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

A while back I got one of the many newsletters I get each week,
but this newsletter was a bit disturbing. This newsletter was
written by a business owner who was trying to tear down their
competition by attacking the owners of the competing business.
If you are looking to make your product look better than that
of the competition the way to go about it should not be by
hurling insults at the owner of the competing product. I was
turned off by this particular marketing plan and I know for
a fact that many others were as well. What in the world was
this person thinking? Why in the world would this person start
a personal attack as a way to gain business for their product?
I know there are times when you may take things personally,
but publicly insulting the competition is never a good idea.
I know it may make you feel a little better in the short term,
but over the long haul you'll end up being viewed as the bad
guy.
